Melissa’s Runway to Reality

Much to the dismay of my husband, I love clothes.  I love shopping for clothes.  I even love window shopping for clothes.  But to MY dismay, my family does not share this love with me:(  You would think that being the mom of 2 boys I would celebrate my girliness with the clothes I wear.  But when I look for trends, I tend to gravitate towards a more classic but androgynous look.  The two trends that I choose from the runways of Fall + Spring reflect that.

The felt hat:  Shelf the straw hat and pull out the felt!  Fall creeps in a little earlier here in Seattle than in Norcal so call myself prepared.  This will be a great addition for my new move to the North West. The felt hat can be paired up with pretty much anything including a bad hair day.  The trick is find the one that fits my child sized head!

Military, timeless?  But think about it.  Does military influence ever leave?

What is so great about the military trend is the opportunity to change it up.  Whether khaki, camo, utility pockets, or boots you can have fun by mixing it up with animal prints, neon or with girly dresses.  The options are endless.

In the last month I’ve picked up three military inspired pieces without even seeking them out.  I can’t wait to experiment!

Who’s that girl? La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la

The only rule is don’t be boring and dress cute wherever you go. Life is too short to blend in.

My last post about NY fashion week is all about the Models, Models, Models….

Some of the current hotties walking the runways in New York.

And the ladies…

And the craziness that is at the backdoor of Marc by Marc Jacobs….

The countdown has started!

Only 18 days until New York Fashion Week! For the past 3 years I’ve attended and loved every minute of freezing my toes off waiting for the celebs to attend the shows. However, this whole baby thing is cramping my style in more ways than one! Standing for 10 hours a day in the freezing cold, shoving it out with other camera men on slippery sidewalks and running the whole day on adrenaline….is probably not the ideal place for a 8 month pregnant lady…wah!

So this seasons coverage will be a few blog posts short of last seasons. Nonetheless, I’d feel lost if I missed the whole event…so I’ll be heading there for only a day or two. There will be a few things different this season.  Rather than battling it out with the paparazzi…I’ll be creeping a few feet back with my zoom lens, rather than running backwards to get the perfect shot of Heidi Klum…I’ll likely be running for my ever-so-often bathroom breaks and instead of trying to look all fashionable and cute…WAIT! there is NO excuse…a lady should always strive to be fashionable and cute…even with a giant watermelon strapped to her stomach:)

Fingers crossed for an Olsen sighting this year!

A few celeb shots from fall 2010…

The Designers

These are a few of the designers we managed to photograph as they left their shows.

Marc by Marc Jacobs chose ’70s silhouettes in bright stripes.

With rocker husband Gavin Rossdale and son Kingston sitting front-row, Gwen Stefani for L.A.M.B. delivered an African-inspired collection.  And wow, does this lady have a following!  A large crowd gathered in the drizzling rain waiting for the designer/singer/songwriter to exit the building.

“For spring 2011, we were inspired by the stylish film, ‘White Mischief’. We were fascinated by the idea of a woman with a very languid, proper veneer with a smoldering sensuality just beneath the surface.” Mark Badgley and James Mischka

Carolina Herrera’s line was inspired by two things:  the traditional clothes of Korea and botanical plates collected in the eighteenth century.

Michael Kors ‘naturaluxe’ style was relaxed sophistication.

Isaac Mizrahi’s spring collection was called IM Xerox, his take on photocopy-like prints.

Tracey Reese’s muse was a traveler of both time and space.

Herve Leger by Max Azria, well-known for his bandage dress, presented a corseted Marie Antoinette of the future.  His wife, Lubov Azria, is of course in one of his latest creations.

Cah razy colorful Betsey Johnson used a bike ride through New York City as her runway setting.  La Tour de Betsey stopped in Brooklyn, Central Park and ended at Times Square.  She then finished her show with her signature cartwheel…we also need to mention she’s 68 years old!?!
